Lepe Leads Wolves Past Yaks

PENDLETON, Ore. - The BMCC women's basketball team picked up their first win in Northwest Athletic Conference east divsion play with a nail bitter win over the Yakima Valley College Yaks 69-68. The Wolves were led by Leanna Lepe (21 pts, 4 ast, 5 stl) who led all scorers, with strong performances by Lexi Robertson (18 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast), Shyann Lamb (10 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast), and Josie Wilson (10 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast).
The Wolves started the game chasing the Yaks as they fell down 9-0 early in the game before Lexi Robertson hit the first 3 pointer of the game for BMCC to get them on the board. The Wolves would then go on to trade points with Yakima for the remainder of the 1st quarter. With less than :30 left in the 1st quarter, Shyann Lamb came up with the clutch steal as Josie Wilson nailed the three that would bring the Wolves to 16-15 at the end of the 1st. For the first three minutes in the 2nd quarter, the two teams would trade points before a 3 point shot would be made by Shyann Lamb and a Lexi Robertson layup with 7:00 remaining in the 2nd quarter would bring the Wolves their first lead of the game 22-21. Lepe would then go on to three made free throws to increase the lead with 6:12 remaining in the half. With 1:57 remaining, Kyra Jacobsen would add a layup for the Wolves who would go up 32-24. Lexi Robertson finished the half with a made jumper to send the Wolves to the locker room with the lead 34-26.
BMCC would come back to the 2nd half and have work to do to hold off the peristance of the Yaks. Paris Wilson (18 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast) would lead the charge for Yakima as the two teams continued to trade points well into the 3rd quarter as Jillian Herres would make the final basket for the Wolves in the quarter to bring it to 46-38. Imani Brown (7pts) would make the jumper that would bring Yakima within two points 46-44 as the Wolves continued to work the boards and find the basket. Abby Gilbert (9pts, 3 reb) would make the 3 point shot that would find the Yaks the lead 49-46. With 6:44 left in the 4th quarter, Shyann Lamb would answer with a 3 pointer of her own to bring it even at 49-49. The Wolves and Yaks would continue to go back and forth going up as much a 4 points in the final quarter of play before Lexi Robertson would make a 3 pointer of her own and Leanna Lepe would make a clutch layup to retake the lead 57-55. Lepe would go on to make 7 of the Wolves final 12 points as BMCC held off Yakima to secure their well earned victory.
With the Wednesday night victory, BMCC improves to 5-8 overall, 1-1 in division play moving to the middle of the table and a three way tie for fourth place. The BMCC women's basketball team hits the road as they will take on the Wenatchee Valley Knights on Saturday January 13th, 2024. Tip off is scheduled for 2pm with the men's basketball team following as they will begin at 4pm.
