Welcome To The New MAC
Welcome To The New MAC
PENDLETON, Ore. - The BMCC athletics department, in conjunction with facilities, has completed preventative maintenance on the gym floor in the MAC. This work was done June/July/Aug. Thank you to Court Sports!
Over the past several years, student-athletes have fundraised for the project out of a desire to refinish the floor to make it safer, in compliance with new Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) standards, and so that its lifespan will benefit future BMCC student-athletes for years to come. Fundraising dollars supported the majority of the project.
The floor had not been refinished since it was installed in the 1970s. Each year, facilities hires a contractor who specializes in gym floors to re-sand it and put down another layer of varnish to protect it. However, the MAC’s gym floor has had so many layers of varnish that it become a safety issue, and the NWAC has told the college it needs to update the floor to stay in compliance of safety standards.
BMCC is fortunate that the wood flooring beneath all the varnish is in excellent shape and did not need to be replaced but rather some sanding and re-painting. By stripping the floor down to the wood and refinishing it, the lifespan of the floor will extend 20-30 years, continuing to protect the wood and providing a solid infrastructure for the MAC. You can see the before, during, and after, in this sneak-peak video below.
BMCC athletics took advantage of good timing for the project. Due to COVID-19, spring athletics and summer activities in the MAC were canceled, which allowed the MAC to have very little foot traffic while the project could be completed. We hope very soon to welcome all of our athletes back to the MAC and to BMCC to see the new improvements.
